Those photographers sojourning the streets DLSR in hand with a white lens attached will know the kind of reactions you get to such kit. You get suspicion, admiration, anger and pesky requests to be photographed (because I want to be in whatever magazine you are working for). Whatever the reaction, it is not neutral, and you are not inconspicuous.
This was the case when I photographed Aardklop 2007 with my Tripod and Canon locked and ready for some crowd shots. An inebriated girl walked into my way and immediately demanded that I photograph her.
“why?”
“because I’m a model”
“I can’t take a photo of you, I don’t have a flash”
“So? Take one in anyways”
“That’s not what I am trying to do. I am taking long exposure shots to capture the rhythm, mood and atmosphere of the crowd… it is too dark to take proper photos of you”
As I said this she started making out with my camera… I think some tongue was involved. EEEEEEK!!! Get off! Get off!!!
“Okay okay, go and stand over there.”
“like this?”
“yeah whatever”
“tell me when you are ready”
(click) “okay” (click) “one, two (click), three! (click)”
“Did it come out right?”
“Yes thankyou… bye!”
I exited quickly because I am no fool to such bawdy festivals. I suspected all along that a hyper aggressive, steroid fuelled rugby prop of a boyfriend was lurking somewhere nearby, ready to manifest his jealousy for his attention seeking girlfriend. As I exited, such a specimen staggered within view and promptly clasped the girl to his side. She returned the gesture and they walked on. Hmmmm, narrow escape? Would he have demanded photos too? Well, I can’t complain. I did get a good photo in the end.
